John enjoys doing a wide range of woodworking, sometimes using other media to compliment the wood. He especially likes to find unique pieces of wood on the island to create beautiful pieces of artwork. Most of the items he designs and produces are finished with a Danish oil and wax finish except for cutting boards and wooden bowls which have a beeswax and mineral oil finish.
He likes to “open” a piece of a tree to reveal its inner beauty, and feels it’s saving a piece of the tree for us to enjoy for the future. Sometimes pieces of wood make it into the wood stove where they are lost forever. Over the many years, when he visits people, he always checks out their wood piles. He has been known to ask owners if he can have a piece or two of their firewood. Of course, they say yes because they know how serious he is about his woodworking and are always fascinated by what he creates from the pieces he is given.
Although John makes some cutting boards and other items that are pretty much alike and available in the Shop, or by order, he really likes doing the one-of-a-kind piece of work. He makes many different things so you never know what might be available at any given time. If you have a special idea for an order, he is willing to talk to you about it to see if he can do it for you.
